My Fragile Heart

When I gave you my fragile heart to hold,

When I placed it in your hands,

A thousand times I did withhold.

A thousand doubts I did withstand.

When I gave you my fragile heart to hold,

When I allowed myself to be open,

I breathed a moment carefree and bold,

A moment to have a love to hope in.

When I gave you my fragile heart to hold,

When finally my trust I surrendered,

I didn’t know how quickly you’d grow cold.

Learned too late that you weren’t a contender.

When I gave you my fragile heart to hold,

When you observed it worn and cracked,

Why pretend and leave the truth untold?

Why not just hand it back?

When I gave you my fragile heart to hold,

When you let it slip from your hands,

A thousand pieces I did behold.

A thousand shards that did land.

Now I have no heart to give,

Now I am as empty as your hands.

Never my heart shall again live.

Never love will it again demand.
