We Cannot Be

Safe in the heart of a trusted friend,

Comfort in the place where our minds meet,

Where pain and anxiety make their end,

But what we are, we cannot be.

Tears, fears and secrets shared,

I know you, and you know me.

This dream we never should have dared,

Because what we are, we cannot be.

The curve of your shoulder fits my head,

Your arms, they were made for me.

But let these words remain unsaid,

Because what we are, we cannot be.

As we tend to our hearts collectively broken,

Laugh and cry at how cruel life can be,

We both hold and hate this truth unspoken,

That what we are, we cannot be.
